this is my year 7 speech for inter-school on factory farmed pigs.i ended up winning the year 7 speech at halcombe school.
don't you just love getting up on a sunday morning to the smell of bacon sizzling in the pan.
put your hand up if you do i know i do.but it never crossed mined where my bacon actually came from.
i was disgusted and saddened when i did find out and i have never eaten it since.
i am here to talk to you about what i would do if i had
the power to change this cruel, unhealthy factory farming of pigs.it's hard to belive that here in new zealand
were we promote such a clean green enviourment with so much open land also known for
it's love of farming that our pigs are being enclosed in such cold concreted, over crowded conditions.
you all think to yourselves if i had the power what would i do about this well i no what i would do.
if i had the power i would give these suffering pigs a chance to have freedom from pain, injury and
disease freedom to express normal behaviour and freedom from fear and distress.unfortunatly factory farmed
animals experience none of these.imagine your life being all squished up not been able to touch the
grass or feel the warmth of the sun.wouldn't you soon become stressed and fustrated and soon to go insane
how do you think pigs feel?all factory farmed animals are kept in a very unsanitary enviourment which is
making pigs become 1.ill 2.dirty and 3.infested with flies i think this is just wrong.when sows are about
to give birth they are often moved to farrowing crates here they are kept in 0.8 by 2 metre stall for upto
6 weeks the sows suffer unable to build nestes for their piglets or mother them properly.over 60,000
n.z sows spend their lives in either the sow stall or in the farrowing crates.we all wish we could have some
sort of power in any way shape or form and that's why if i had the power i would change all of this and would you belive
that one simple choice you make at your local supermarket or resturant could effect millions of lives.
buy choosing not to buy or eat factory farmed pork you are helping put an end to the cruelty and torture
that many pigs are subjected to in numerous pig farms across the nation .there are many different organisations
out there like wspr, spca or safe and these are the people who are fighting for animal welfare just like me.
i hope that one day the inhumane treatment of pigs dissapers completly
would you rather eat terrified disgustinly keeped pigs or free ranged where pigs can run around on fresh grass
soaking up the sun and having abit of dignity to their life.we all hold the power to change the way our pigs are
farmed in this beautiful country,it all starts with you the individual person and how you choose to buy your porkfactory farmed or free ranged it's that simple so come on guys lets stand up for the little piggy's and make a change.
